What is SHBG and why does it matter?

SHBG (Sex Hormone Binding Globulin) is a protein produced by your liver that binds to hormones like testosterone, estrogen, and T3. When SHBG is elevated, it binds too much of these hormones, making them unavailable to your cells. Your labs may show normal total hormone levels, but your free (usable) hormone levels are too low. This is why you can be on hormones and still feel terrible.

How do I know if my SHBG is high?

You can test SHBG through a simple blood test… ask your provider to include it in your hormone panel. Symptoms of elevated SHBG often mirror low hormone symptoms: low libido, fatigue, sluggish metabolism, difficulty losing weight, thinning hair, and brain fog… even when total hormone levels look normal. The key clue is a disconnect between your total and free hormone levels.
